What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students follow agreed norms for collegial discussion, monitor progress toward goals and deadlines, and carry out assigned roles. They help the group stay productive and inclusive.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student follows turn-taking and response norms, completes a role, and checks progress against the goal. The student helps adjust timing or tasks when needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may focus on their own role while ignoring group progress. They may treat norms as rules enforced by one leader rather than shared responsibilities.

How to Assess It

Give groups a ten-minute decision task with roles, a goal, and a midpoint deadline. Use a checklist for norms, role work, and progress tracking.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use role cards, a visible goal, and a progress tracker during a timed group task.

  2. Ask students which discussion norm helps a group meet deadlines without silencing ideas.

  3. Play Norms Scenario Sort with productive and unproductive group behaviors.

  4. Run a planning meeting for a class event with assigned roles and checkpoints.
