What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students follow collegial discussion norms, set specific goals and deadlines, and define roles as needed. They monitor whether the group is working productively.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student follows listening and turn-taking norms, completes a defined role, and helps track a clear goal. The group meets checkpoints or revises its plan openly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may adopt vague goals or roles that do not guide action. They may focus on personal work while ignoring shared norms, progress, or deadlines.

How to Assess It

Give groups a twelve-minute task. Require written norms, one goal, a midpoint deadline, defined roles, and a brief progress check.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use role cards, a visible goal, and a two-checkpoint timeline during a collaborative task.

  2. Ask students which norm keeps disagreement collegial and work on schedule.

  3. Play Group Plan Audit with clear and unclear goals, roles, and deadlines.

  4. Run a planning meeting for a class event with assigned responsibilities and checkpoints.
