What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students respond thoughtfully to diverse perspectives and summarize agreements and disagreements accurately. They qualify or justify views and make new connections based on evidence and reasoning.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student represents opposing positions fairly, identifies precise common ground and disagreement, and updates a claim when warranted. New connections follow logically from the exchange.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reduce disagreement to two extreme sides. They may repeat positions without synthesizing them or change a view without explaining the evidence.

How to Assess It

After a seminar, ask students to summarize one agreement and disagreement, then qualify or justify their view and make one evidence-based connection.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Track perspectives, agreements, disagreements, evidence, and new connections on a seminar synthesis board.

  2. Ask students which disagreement is substantive and which is mostly about terms.

  3. Play Viewpoint Synthesis with speaker notes and claim revisions.

  4. Synthesize stakeholder perspectives after a public forum or policy debate.
