What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students respond thoughtfully to diverse perspectives and summarize agreements and disagreements accurately. They qualify or justify views and make new connections based on evidence and reasoning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student represents opposing positions fairly, identifies precise common ground and disagreement, and updates a claim when warranted. New connections follow logically from the exchange.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reduce disagreement to two extreme sides. They may repeat positions without synthesizing them or change a view without explaining the evidence.
How to Assess It
- After a seminar, ask students to summarize one agreement and disagreement, then qualify or justify their view and make one evidence-based connection.
