What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students acknowledge new information and qualify or justify their views in light of evidence. They explain whether evidence changes the scope, confidence, or support for a position.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student restates new information accurately and updates a claim when warranted. If the view remains, the student justifies it with evidence that addresses the new point.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may refuse to adjust language despite contrary evidence. They may abandon a view too quickly or claim qualification without stating what changed.
How to Assess It
- After a discussion introduces conflicting evidence, ask students to acknowledge it and write a revised or newly justified position with reasoning.
