What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students develop claims and counterclaims fairly, supplying evidence for both and analyzing strengths and limitations. They anticipate audience knowledge and concerns.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student gives each side accurate, proportional development and evaluates evidence rather than hiding weaknesses. Responses address what the intended audience likely knows and worries about.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may present the counterclaim only to dismiss it quickly. They may confuse balance with equal word counts or ignore their own claim’s limits.
How to Assess It
- Provide competing claims and evidence. Ask students to draft a balanced section that develops both, names strengths and limits, and addresses one audience concern.
