What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write an argument with a precise claim, distinct counterclaim, logical reasoning, and relevant evidence from credible sources. They use varied transitions, precise vocabulary, appropriate tone, and a conclusion explaining the argument's significance.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student builds a clear line of reasoning and represents the counterclaim accurately. Varied transitions clarify relationships among claims, reasons, and evidence, while the conclusion explains why the argument matters.

Common Misconceptions

Students may alternate between claims without establishing a logical relationship or use transitions for variety rather than accuracy. They may choose credible evidence that does not prove the reason or caricature the counterclaim.

How to Assess It

Provide a claim, counterclaim, and three evidence excerpts. Ask students for one reasoned paragraph using the best evidence, two accurate transitions, and a significance statement.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build an argument pathway with claim, counterclaim, reason, evidence, transition, and conclusion cards, then test every connection.

  2. Ask, ‘Should public spaces restrict advertising, and what reasoning connects your strongest evidence to the claim?’

  3. Play Transition Precision by choosing among connectors that signal contrast, cause, example, concession, or conclusion.

  4. Draft a policy comment for a local issue using credible evidence, a fair counterclaim, and a significance statement.
