Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students write an argument with a precise claim and logically organized reasons, facts, and details. They use topic-specific language, transitions, and a conclusion that relates directly to the argument.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student states a focused claim and places each fact or detail with the reason it supports. Precise vocabulary and transitions clarify the logic, and the conclusion follows from the presented case.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose a broad claim that their facts cannot fully support. They may list facts without connecting them to reasons, use transitions randomly, or end with a new argument.
How to Assess It: Ask students to argue for one change to the classroom library. Require a precise claim, two organized reasons with evidence, transitions, precise terms, and a related conclusion.

Lesson moves
