Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students write an argument with a clear claim, relevant evidence, and logically organized reasons. They use precise, topic-specific words, linking language, and a conclusion that follows from the argument.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student introduces a claim and groups reasons with the details that support them. Linking words show how ideas connect, and the ending closes the argument without introducing an unrelated point.
Common Misconceptions: Students may state a preference instead of a claim or list reasons with no supporting details. They may use evidence that does not fit, repeat the claim as the conclusion, or rely on vague words.
How to Assess It: Ask students to argue for one class read-aloud. Require a claim, two organized reasons with evidence, linking words, precise vocabulary, and a concluding sentence.

Lesson moves

Arrange claim, reason, evidence, linking-word, and conclusion cards into a logical argument, then explain the order.
Ask, ‘Which school lunch should return, and what facts or details would make your claim convincing?’
Play Evidence Sort by matching details to claims and removing cards that are relevant to the topic but not the argument.
