What Students Need to Do

Students write an argument with a precise claim, a distinct counterclaim, logical reasoning, and relevant evidence from credible sources. They use precise vocabulary, transitions, appropriate tone, and a conclusion explaining significance.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student organizes reasons and evidence so each step of the argument is easy to follow. The counterclaim is represented accurately, sources are credible, and the conclusion explains why the argument matters.

Common Misconceptions

Students may substitute repeated reasons for logical reasoning or include evidence that is credible but irrelevant. They may distort a counterclaim, shift tone, or end by merely copying the claim.

How to Assess It

Provide two sources and an issue with two positions. Ask for a claim, counterclaim, one reason with evidence and reasoning, a transition, and significance statement.

   Map claim, counterclaim, reasons, evidence, and reasoning on connected cards, then identify any unsupported link.

   Ask, ‘Should schools limit personal devices, and which credible evidence supports your reasoning while addressing the counterclaim?’

   Play Relevant and Credible, scoring source cards separately for trustworthiness and usefulness to a specific claim.

   Write a community op-ed paragraph with a fair counterclaim, cited evidence, logical reasoning, and an appropriate tone.
