What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students conclude an argument by explaining its significance. They connect the closing to established claims, reasons, and evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The conclusion synthesizes the argument and clarifies an implication or consequence. It adds significance without new unsupported material.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat the thesis or end with a generic call to action. They may introduce a new reason too late.
How to Assess It
- Provide an argument missing its ending. Ask students to write a conclusion that follows from evidence and explains why the claim matters.
