What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write an argument with a precise claim and logically ordered reasons supported by facts and details from multiple sources. They use precise vocabulary, transitions, an appropriate style and tone, and a conclusion tied to the argument.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student organizes source-based evidence under the reason it supports and explains why it matters. Transitions clarify relationships, language fits the topic and audience, and the conclusion follows from the argument.

Common Misconceptions

Students may collect facts from several sources without connecting them to a claim. They may confuse source quantity with evidence quality, shift tone unexpectedly, or add a new reason in the conclusion.

How to Assess It

Provide two short sources about school gardens. Ask students for a claim, two ordered reasons with cited facts, a transition, and a related concluding sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort facts from two source cards beneath claim and reason headings, then remove evidence that does not support the argument.

  2. Ask, ‘Should our school reduce food waste, and which source details would support your strongest reasons?’

  3. Play Transition Ladder by arranging argument sentences and selecting precise connectors for each relationship.

  4. Write a proposal for a community improvement using evidence from a map, short report, and survey.
