What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write an argument with a precise claim, acknowledge and distinguish a counterclaim, and organize reasons and evidence logically. They use credible sources, precise language, transitions, appropriate tone, and a conclusion explaining the argument's significance.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student separates the claim from a reasonable opposing position and supports the claim with relevant source evidence. The reasoning is clear, transitions show relationships, and the ending explains why the case matters.

Common Misconceptions

Students may mention a counterclaim only to dismiss it or use a source because it agrees with them without checking credibility. They may summarize evidence instead of reasoning from it or change tone mid-argument.

How to Assess It

Provide a claim, counterclaim, and two short sources. Ask students for one organized paragraph with credible evidence, reasoning, a transition, and a sentence explaining significance.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Arrange claim, counterclaim, reason, evidence, and conclusion cards into a logical structure, then defend the arrangement.

  2. Ask, ‘Should homework policies change, and which credible evidence addresses both the claim and counterclaim?’

  3. Play Source Credibility Sort before matching the strongest usable evidence to each argument reason.

  4. Write a letter about a local issue using a credible source, respectful counterclaim, and significance statement.
