- Students maintain a style and tone suited to the argumentative task. Choices remain consistent with purpose, audience, and subject.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student uses a clear, respectful, evidence-focused voice from beginning to end. Shifts in formality or attitude are deliberate and appropriate.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may become insulting when addressing counterclaims. They may alternate between casual and overly formal language without purpose.
How to Assess It
- Give an argument with inconsistent tone. Ask students to revise it for a named audience and explain three style choices.
