What Mastery Looks Like: The opening presents focused claims and a fair counterclaim with explicit relationships. The organization anticipates how evidence and reasoning will develop.
Common Misconceptions: Students may list multiple claims without hierarchy. They may bury the counterclaim, misrepresent it, or organize evidence by source instead of reasoning.
How to Assess It: Give an issue and source set. Ask students to draft an introduction and argument map showing claims, counterclaim, reasons, and evidence.
