What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine unfamiliar or multiple-meaning words through context, word-change patterns, and general or specialized references. They form a preliminary meaning and verify its precision, pronunciation, part of speech, and etymology when relevant.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student combines textual, grammatical, morphological, and reference evidence to select the correct sense. The student recognizes related forms across parts of speech and revises an inference when verification shows a mismatch.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a familiar meaning that fits the sentence loosely or treat related forms as interchangeable. They may cite etymology as the current definition or stop after confirming only part of the word's use.

How to Assess It

Give students three discipline-specific target words in context. Ask them to infer, document strategies, verify each meaning, and explain one revision from preliminary to final.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build vocabulary dossiers with context, function, word family, reference evidence, etymology, preliminary meaning, and verified meaning.

  2. Ask, ‘What is your strongest preliminary meaning, and which source could verify its exact use in this discipline?’

  3. Play Verify the Sense by comparing context with multiple reference entries and rejecting tempting but inaccurate meanings.

  4. Investigate a technical term in a primary source using context, morphology, etymology, and a specialized reference.
