What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students verify a preliminary meaning for an unfamiliar or multiple-meaning word or phrase. They test the inference against broader context, dictionaries, or specialized references and revise when evidence requires it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student records an initial interpretation and chooses a source capable of testing its contextual sense. The student weighs confirming and conflicting evidence and explains the final verified meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may equate finding the word in a dictionary with verifying the correct sense. They may ignore contradictory context, disciplinary usage, or part of speech because one entry resembles the initial guess.
How to Assess It
- Give students a discipline-specific term with two plausible senses. Ask them to infer, verify through context and reference evidence, and document any revision.

Play Sense Verification Hearing by defending or revising meanings after new textual and reference evidence appears.
Verify a consequential term in a policy, contract, or scientific claim before summarizing its implications.
