What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students verify a preliminary interpretation of a word or phrase using context, a dictionary, or another reliable reference. They compare evidence and revise the interpretation when it is incomplete or inaccurate.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student records an initial meaning and selects a check capable of confirming or disproving it. The student explains the verification evidence and produces a justified final meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may search only for confirmation or treat the first familiar definition as proof. They may report that a source agrees without comparing the source meaning to the actual context.
How to Assess It
- Give students an ambiguous word in a paragraph. Ask for a preliminary meaning, verification evidence from context or reference, and a documented final decision.
