What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine meanings of unfamiliar words, phrases, figurative language, and academic or subject words. They use context and other text clues to explain the meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student proposes a meaning that fits the sentence and confirms it with surrounding clues. The student recognizes when a phrase is figurative rather than literal.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the first dictionary meaning without checking context. They may interpret figurative language literally or ignore subject-specific clues.
How to Assess It
- Give a short passage with one unfamiliar academic word and one figurative phrase. Ask students to infer both meanings and underline the supporting clues.
