What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine meanings of words, phrases, figurative language, and academic or subject terms. They analyze how those choices shape meaning, tone, or mood.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student infers a contextual meaning and explains the effect of the author’s wording. The response distinguishes literal meaning from connotation or figurative effect.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may define a word correctly but ignore its effect in the passage. They may label tone or mood without linking it to specific language.
How to Assess It
- Give a short passage with one figurative phrase and one precise word. Ask students to explain both meanings and their effect on tone or mood.
