What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students verify a preliminary meaning for a word or phrase through context, dictionaries, or other reliable references. They compare the initial inference with evidence and revise it when needed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects a verification method that can genuinely test the inference. The student identifies confirming or conflicting evidence and explains why the final meaning is more precise.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may seek only confirming evidence or cite a definition without matching its sense to the passage. They may keep the original guess after verification exposes a contradiction.
How to Assess It
- Give students a target phrase with two plausible meanings. Ask them to infer, verify with context and reference evidence, and document the final decision.

Ask, ‘Which evidence would force you to revise this meaning, and where can you find it?’
Play Meaning Cross-Examination by challenging initial interpretations with new contexts and reference entries.
Verify a technical phrase from a consumer agreement before explaining its practical meaning to classmates.
