What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students consult general and specialized references for pronunciation, precise meaning, part of speech, and etymology. They compare entries and choose the source and sense suited to the discipline and passage.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student navigates pronunciation keys, grammatical labels, usage notes, origins, and subject labels accurately. The student explains how the chosen entry resolves a specific question about the word.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat etymology as a word's current definition or assume thesaurus entries are exact substitutes. They may ignore usage and subject labels that limit a sense.

How to Assess It

Give students a technical word in context and two reference entries. Ask them to report pronunciation, meaning, part of speech, etymology, and the fitting sense.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Compare dictionary, etymology, thesaurus, and specialized-glossary entries for one word, then label each source's useful information.

  2. Ask, ‘Which entry detail resolves the question we have about this word, and why is that source appropriate?’

  3. Play Reference Evidence Challenge by finding pronunciation, sense, grammar, origin, and subject information with the best tool.

  4. Research a key term from a court opinion or scientific paper and prepare an accurate usage note.
