What Students Need to Do
- Students consult dictionaries, glossaries, and thesauruses to find pronunciation and precise meanings of key words and phrases. They compare entries and choose the sense that fits the passage.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects an appropriate reference, locates the entry, and interprets pronunciation and meaning information. The student distinguishes relevant senses and avoids substituting a near synonym that changes the meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use a thesaurus as a list of exact replacements or select the first dictionary sense. They may overlook phrase entries, pronunciation guides, or context labels that narrow meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students one multiple-meaning word and one phrase in context. Ask them to choose references, report pronunciation, and explain the precise fitting meanings.
