What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students consult dictionaries, glossaries, and thesauruses to find pronunciation and precise meanings of key words and phrases. They select the reference and entry suited to the text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student locates an entry, reads pronunciation information, and compares relevant senses. The student chooses the meaning that fits the context and explains why that reference was useful.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat thesaurus words as exact substitutes or choose the first dictionary sense automatically. They may skip pronunciation information or overlook a phrase listed under a key word.
How to Assess It
- Give students one unfamiliar word and one phrase in context. Ask them to choose references and report pronunciation and precise meaning for each.
