What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students consult dictionaries, glossaries, and thesauruses to find pronunciation, precise meaning, or part of speech. They compare entries and select the information that fits the text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses an appropriate reference and reads pronunciation, sense, and grammatical labels accurately. The student explains why the selected entry fits better than another possible sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the first entry or treat a thesaurus synonym as interchangeable. They may ignore part of speech, pronunciation differences, or discipline labels that distinguish meanings.
How to Assess It
- Give students a multiple-meaning word in context. Ask them to use a reference to report pronunciation, part of speech, precise meaning, and one rejected sense.

Ask, ‘Which entry matches this grammatical use, and what detail rules out the other senses?’
Play Reference Entry Audit by identifying and correcting inaccurate conclusions drawn from real-looking entries.
Use a subject glossary and dictionary to prepare accurate vocabulary notes for a lab or historical source.
