What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students consult print and digital general or specialized references to find pronunciation, precise meaning, or part of speech. They choose a source suited to the word, discipline, and information needed.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects an appropriate dictionary, glossary, or thesaurus and navigates its entry accurately. The student compares entries and chooses the meaning and grammatical use that fit the text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use a thesaurus as a list of interchangeable words or select the first dictionary sense. They may consult a general source when a specialized glossary defines the term more precisely.

How to Assess It

Give students one general word and one technical term in context. Ask them to choose references and report pronunciation, meaning, and part of speech.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses, and digital references; students match each vocabulary need to the best tool.

  2. Ask, ‘Which entry fits this sentence, and what pronunciation or part-of-speech detail confirms your choice?’

  3. Play Reference Relay by locating specified entry information accurately and explaining why the source fits.

  4. Use a specialized glossary to clarify terminology in a science or technology article before presenting its main idea.
