What Students Need to Do

Students determine unfamiliar or multiple-meaning words using context, Greek and Latin parts, and general or specialized references. They form a preliminary meaning, then verify its pronunciation, precision, and part of speech.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects an efficient strategy based on the word and discipline. The student integrates context, morphology, and reference evidence, then corrects an initial meaning when verification contradicts it.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a plausible inference as final or consult only a general dictionary for a specialized term. They may ignore part of speech or select a definition from the wrong discipline.

How to Assess It

Give students three target words from different subjects. Ask them to infer each meaning, choose an appropriate reference, and document one verified revision.
