What Students Need to Do

Students determine unfamiliar or multiple-meaning words by using context, Greek and Latin parts, and reference materials. They form a preliminary meaning and verify it against the text or a reliable source.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student uses sentence function and paragraph meaning alongside roots or affixes to build a defensible definition. The student checks pronunciation, part of speech, and precise meaning when needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may stop after a plausible guess or choose a dictionary entry that matches the word but not the passage. They may mistake a word's position for meaning without considering its grammatical function.

How to Assess It

Give students three target words in a paragraph. Ask them to infer each meaning, label the strategy, and verify one result with a reference or context check.
