What Students Need to Do

Students determine unfamiliar or multiple-meaning words using context, Greek and Latin parts, and general or specialized references. They verify preliminary meanings against the passage, pronunciation, part of speech, and reference evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student combines semantic, grammatical, morphological, and reference clues rather than relying on one guess. The student selects a precise meaning and revises it when verification reveals a mismatch.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat verification as finding any definition that resembles the guess. They may overlook disciplinary meaning, grammatical function, or the limits of a root-based inference.

How to Assess It

Give students three target words from different texts. Ask them to infer, document the strategies used, and verify each meaning with context or a reference.

   Create evidence grids for context, function, roots, references, preliminary meaning, and verified meaning for each target word.

   Ask, ‘Which evidence supports your first meaning, and what finding would require you to revise it?’
