What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine unfamiliar or multiple-meaning words through context, Greek and Latin word parts, and reference materials. They choose strategies flexibly and verify that the resulting meaning fits the text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies cause, effect, or comparison clues and recognizes useful roots or affixes. The student consults a dictionary, glossary, or thesaurus for pronunciation and precise meaning when other clues are incomplete.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely on topic knowledge instead of the passage's clues or assign a root meaning to an unrelated letter pattern. They may choose a reference definition without checking context.
How to Assess It
- Give students three target words in passages. Ask them to use context for one, roots for another, and a reference for the third, explaining each result.

Ask, ‘Which clues suggest the meaning, and what tool could verify its pronunciation and precision?’
Play Strategy Triathlon by solving one word through context, word parts, and a reference, then comparing results.
Use a science article and glossary to infer, analyze, and verify unfamiliar technical words.
