What Students Need to Do

Students use several strategies to determine unfamiliar or multiple-meaning words. They examine context, Greek and Latin word parts, and reference materials, then choose the meaning that fits the text.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects a useful first strategy and explains the clue it provides. The student consults a dictionary, glossary, or thesaurus when needed and confirms pronunciation and precise meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may accept a partial context guess without checking it or assume every familiar letter group is a meaningful root. They may choose the first reference entry instead of the text-appropriate meaning.

How to Assess It

Give students three unfamiliar words in short passages. Ask them to use different strategies, state each meaning, and verify one word with a reference.

   Rotate through context, root-and-affix, dictionary, glossary, and thesaurus stations to solve and verify target words.
