What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify and use patterns of word changes that signal different meanings or parts of speech. They move accurately among forms such as analyze, analysis, and analytical or advocate and advocacy.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student recognizes how a suffix or internal change creates a noun, verb, adjective, or related meaning. The student selects and forms the version that fits a sentence grammatically and semantically.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use related word forms interchangeably because the core meaning is similar. They may choose a familiar suffix without making the spelling changes required by the word family.
How to Assess It
- Give students a paragraph with four blanks and one word-family list. Ask them to form and insert the correct version for each grammatical role.

Ways to Teach It
Build word-family tables with meaning, part of speech, affix, spelling change, and an original sentence for each form.
Ask, ‘Why does this sentence require analysis rather than analyze or analytical?’
Play Word Form Relay by changing a base into the noun, verb, adjective, or advocate-related form required by a sentence.
Edit a résumé or lab report for incorrect word forms that obscure actions, qualities, and concepts.
