What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prepare for discussions by reading or studying, then use that preparation to explore ideas. They listen, take turns, stay on topic, link comments, ask questions, explain their thinking, and consider individual differences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student contributes clear ideas across several exchanges and connects them to the material or another speaker's comment. The student asks a question to check understanding and explains what the discussion clarified.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may arrive with an opinion but no preparation from the assigned material. They may repeat others, ask unrelated questions, or state agreement without explaining their own understanding.
How to Assess It
- Have groups discuss a short text with one prepared note per student. Use a checklist for listening, linked comments, a checking question, and a clear explanation.

Ways to Teach It
Give each student an evidence sticky note and a discussion role card for a four-person text conversation.
Ask, ‘Which idea from the reading should our group explore, and how does it connect to a classmate's comment?’
Play Link, Question, Explain, with students drawing a card that names the next required discussion move.
Hold a planning meeting for a class event, assigning roles and using respectful questions to understand different needs.
