What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students follow agreed discussion norms by listening actively, taking turns, and staying on topic. They show attention through relevant responses.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student waits, listens, and contributes an on-topic idea at an appropriate time. The student can restate a peer’s point before responding.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may remain quiet without listening. They may interrupt, repeat their own idea, or shift topics.
How to Assess It
- Observe a five-minute group discussion with a checklist for active listening, turn-taking, and on-topic contributions.
