What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students follow agreed rules when talking with peers and adults. They listen to others, take turns, and stay with the shared topic in groups and during play.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student waits for a turn, attends to a speaker in an accessible way, and responds on topic. The student can name or demonstrate the group's conversation rules.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat waiting quietly as listening without responding to the speaker's idea. They may take turns but change the topic or interrupt when excited.

How to Assess It

Have pairs discuss a familiar toy for three exchanges. Observe whether the student listens, takes turns, and keeps each response connected to the shared topic.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Pass a talking object around a small group, with each student listening and adding one on-topic response.

  2. Ask, ‘What did your partner say, and what could you add without changing the topic?’

  3. Play Conversation Rule Charades for listening, turn-taking, interrupting, staying on topic, and changing topics.

  4. Practice using conversation rules while planning roles and materials for a shared classroom play center.
