What Students Need to Do: Students follow shared discussion rules by listening, waiting for a turn, and staying on the topic. They respond in ways that show attention to other speakers.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student waits to speak, listens without interrupting, and adds a relevant idea. The student can restate a classmate’s point before contributing.
Common Misconceptions: Students may wait silently without actively listening. They may repeat their own point, interrupt, or shift to an unrelated topic.
How to Assess It: Run a four-minute small-group discussion with a simple prompt. Use a checklist for listening, turn-taking, and on-topic contributions.
