What Students Need to Do

Students explain their own ideas and understanding after or during discussion. They state what they think and how the exchange informed that understanding.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student gives a clear idea with a reason or example. The explanation distinguishes personal thinking from a summary of others’ comments.

Common Misconceptions

Students may repeat the last speaker instead of explaining their own understanding. They may state an opinion without reasons.

How to Assess It

After a group discussion, ask students to explain their current understanding in two sentences and name one reason or discussion detail.
