What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose among context, affixes, roots, glossaries, and beginning dictionaries to clarify unfamiliar or multiple-meaning words. They use one or more strategies and check the result against the text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies the available clues and selects an efficient strategy. The student states a precise meaning, explains the evidence, and consults a reference when the clues remain uncertain.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may depend on one clue even when it produces an awkward meaning. They may copy the first dictionary entry, confuse a look-alike root, or ignore how an affix changes the word.
How to Assess It
- Give students four target words in short passages. Ask them to label the strategy used, define each word, and show how they confirmed one uncertain meaning.
