What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine how a familiar prefix or suffix changes a known word's meaning. They analyze the affix and base together to understand the newly formed word.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student separates the affix and base, explains each useful meaning, and combines them accurately. The student checks the explanation in the word's sentence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may define only the base word or give the affix one fixed meaning in every word. They may split the word incorrectly and treat letters inside the base as an affix.

How to Assess It

Give students disagreeable, careless, and preheat in sentences. Ask them to mark each affix and base, then explain the complete meaning.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build words with base, prefix, and suffix tiles, then write a definition equation for each result.

  2. Ask, ‘How do comfortable and uncomfortable differ, and which word part creates that difference?’

  3. Play Affix Detective by finding the real affix among plausible but incorrect word splits.

  4. Identify affixed words in appliance directions and explain how each affix clarifies the required action.
