What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a familiar root word to infer the meaning of an unfamiliar related word. They identify the shared meaning and notice how the new ending changes the word's use.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can locate the known root within a related word and explain the connection. The student proposes a meaning that fits both the root and the sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may group words because they share letters even when they do not share a root meaning. They may give only the root's meaning and ignore what the added ending contributes.
How to Assess It
- Show add, addition, and additional in sentences. Ask students to mark the shared root idea and explain the unfamiliar form.
