What Students Need to Do
- Students use a known root to infer an unfamiliar word that belongs to the same word family. They connect the shared root meaning with the new word's sentence and added parts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies a genuine shared root and explains the meaning connection between two related words. The student proposes a precise meaning that also fits the context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume words are related because they share several letters. They may repeat the root's meaning without accounting for the new word's ending, part of speech, or sentence use.
How to Assess It
- Show company and companion in short sentences. Ask students to identify the shared root clue and explain the unfamiliar word in context.
