What Students Need to Do

Students join conversations with peers and adults while listening, taking turns, and staying on topic. They connect their comments to earlier remarks, ask for clarification or more explanation when needed, and communicate respectfully across individual differences.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student contributes across several exchanges rather than making one isolated comment. The student can paraphrase a classmate's idea, add a connected thought, and ask a focused follow-up question.

Common Misconceptions

Students may begin a new topic instead of linking to the current discussion. They may say they are confused without naming what needs clarification or interrupt before hearing the full idea.

How to Assess It

Have groups discuss a familiar text for four minutes. Track whether each student follows the norms, links one comment, asks one clarification question, and communicates respectfully across individual differences.

   Use linking-stem cards during a partner talk, such as ‘I agree because’ and ‘That connects to.’

   Ask, ‘What did your partner say, and what question would help you understand the idea better?’

   Play Conversation Chain, requiring each speaker to connect to the previous comment before adding a new idea.

   Role-play asking a coach or club leader for clearer directions and responding with a linked follow-up.
