What Students Need to Do

Students join conversations with classmates and adults in groups and during play. They listen, take turns, stay on topic, exchange several comments, and communicate respectfully with people who may respond differently.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student follows simple discussion rules and responds more than once to the same partner or topic. The student listens to a different idea without dismissing or talking over the speaker.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat conversation as taking one turn and leaving, or repeat their own idea without listening. They may interrupt, change the topic, or reject a classmate's way of communicating.

How to Assess It

Give pairs a familiar toy to discuss for three exchanges. Listen for turn-taking, staying on topic, and a response that connects to the partner's words.

   Pass a talking object around a play circle, with each student responding before adding a related idea.

   Ask partners, ‘How could we build this together, and what did your partner suggest?’

   Play Conversation Steps by sequencing picture cards for listen, wait, respond, and ask.
