What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize that people may communicate, listen, respond, move, or need time in different ways. They adjust respectfully so diverse classmates and adults can participate in conversation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student notices or accepts a communication difference without teasing, dismissing, or taking over. The student can wait, clarify, use another mode, or invite participation as the situation requires.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may expect everyone to speak, look, or respond in one way. They may interpret extra wait time, a communication tool, home-language use, or a different response style as lack of interest.
How to Assess It
- Use a role-play where a partner needs extra wait time or points to a picture to respond. Ask the student to continue respectfully and include the partner.
