What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students consider individual differences when communicating. They adjust pace, wording, turn-taking, or supports so others can participate and understand.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student notices a communication need and responds respectfully. The adjustment helps without speaking for or excluding the other person.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume what someone needs without asking. They may think fairness always means identical communication.

How to Assess It

Give a partner scenario involving different communication needs. Ask students to demonstrate two respectful adjustments and explain them.
