What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students take part in conversations with classmates and adults across several exchanges. They listen, take turns, stay on topic, respond to others, ask for clarification, and communicate respectfully across individual differences.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student follows the group's rules without needing repeated reminders. The student links a comment to what someone else said and asks a useful question when an idea is unclear.

Common Misconceptions

Students may wait only for their turn to speak instead of listening, or shift to an unrelated topic. They may repeat a classmate's words without adding an idea or question.

How to Assess It

Give pairs a familiar picture to discuss for three exchanges. Listen for turn-taking, one linked response, and a clarification question when needed.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use a talking token circle where each student listens, responds to the previous speaker, and passes the token.

  2. Ask pairs, ‘Which classroom pet would be best, and what did your partner say that shaped your thinking?’

  3. Play Stay or Stray by sorting sample comments into on-topic responses and comments that change the subject.

  4. Practice asking a librarian for clarification about where to find a book and responding to the directions.
