What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students respond to others’ comments and continue a conversation through several connected exchanges. They add relevant ideas, questions, or details.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student refers to a prior comment before adding something related. The exchange continues beyond one question and answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may wait for a turn but begin a new topic. They may repeat a comment without adding information.
How to Assess It
- Run a partner conversation and require three connected exchanges in which each response links to the previous comment.
