What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build on others’ comments across several conversational turns. They link a new idea to something a previous speaker said.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student names or paraphrases a prior comment before adding a relevant idea, example, or question. The connection continues through multiple exchanges.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may wait for a turn but introduce an unrelated idea. They may repeat a comment without extending it.
How to Assess It
- Run a four-person discussion. Require each student to link one contribution to a peer and continue the exchange for at least three connected turns.
