What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose among several strategies to determine an unfamiliar or multiple-meaning word. They use sentence context, prefixes, roots, compound parts, and a glossary or beginning dictionary.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects a strategy that fits the word and explains the clue it provides. The student combines clues when needed and checks that the meaning fits the sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use the same strategy for every word or stop after one weak clue. They may copy a dictionary definition without choosing the meaning that fits the text.
How to Assess It
- Give students three unfamiliar words in sentences. Ask them to choose and label a strategy for each, state the meaning, and explain how they checked it.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations for context, prefixes, roots, compounds, and glossaries; students solve one word at each station.
Ask, ‘Which strategy gives the strongest clue for this word, and what second clue could confirm it?’
Play Strategy Spin, using a spinner to test different word-solving methods and reject clues that do not fit.
Decode unfamiliar words on a museum brochure using compound parts, context, and its glossary.
