What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use glossaries and beginning dictionaries to determine or clarify words and phrases. They locate entries, read simple definitions, and choose the meaning that fits the text.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can find a word alphabetically or in a text glossary and use guide information accurately. The student restates the fitting definition in plain language rather than copying blindly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may search by the second letter before checking the first or select the first listed meaning automatically. They may copy a definition containing more unfamiliar words without clarifying it.

How to Assess It

Give students a beginning dictionary and a passage glossary. Ask them to locate two words, choose the fitting meanings, and explain each in their own words.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use alphabet cards and guide-word tabs to locate entries, then match each word to its text-appropriate definition.

  2. Ask, ‘Which glossary or dictionary meaning fits this sentence, and what detail helped you choose?’

  3. Play Reference Race by locating words accurately and reporting the definition that fits an example sentence.

  4. Use a nonfiction book's glossary to clarify terms before explaining one page to a partner.
