Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students work out the meaning of an unfamiliar word or a familiar word used in a new way. They use the sentence, common word parts, and related forms of a root word as clues.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can choose a useful strategy instead of guessing or stopping. The student can explain how context, an affix, or a root form supports the chosen meaning.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose the first meaning they know even when it does not fit the sentence. They may overlook endings such as -ed and -ing or treat each form as an unrelated word.
How to Assess It: Show the sentence, ‘The playful puppy played with us.’ Ask the student to explain playful and played using the sentence and the root play.

Lesson moves

Build a word family with root and affix cards, then read each new word in a matching sentence.
Ask, ‘What could light mean in each sentence, and which words helped you decide?’
Play Context Clue Detective with short sentences containing familiar words used in different ways.
Examine words on classroom labels or directions and use roots, endings, and context to explain their meanings.
